Spanierman Gallery is pleased to announce the opening on December 15, 2011 of Artists of the East End, Part 2, featuring works created from the mid-twentieth century to the present by artists who have lived and worked on eastern Long Island. Over the generations, many artists have ventured to the far end of Long Island in search of respite from urban life in an environment of extreme natural beauty. However, beginning in the 1950s, for many artists, an equally strong allure of this region was its artist-community, in which the sophistication and intellectual life of the New York art world was unabated if not heightened. Painting in studios larger than those in the city and working independently, while sharing new ideas, artists created some of their most experimental and powerful works on the East End.
