A painter of boldly staged, surreal images, Joyce Ho was born in Taiwan in 1983 and moved to the United States when she was fourteen. After receiving her B.A. from
the University of California, Irvine, she returned to Taiwan, where she worked as a scenic artist for Riverbed Theatre, an avant-garde theatre company; eight years later she returned to the United States where she received her M.A. in painting from the University of Iowa in 2010.
Joyce Ho’s involvement in the theater had a strong influence on her painting. According to the artist, “I think like a director of the stage and often use theatrical metaphors
to describe my work.” She paints with strong yellows and warms hues, which she combines with distorted and oddly angled images to create what she calls “peaceful violence.”
Ho has exhibited at the Venice Biennale; Kobe Biennale, Japan; Animamix Biennale, Beijing; Museum of Contemporary Art, Shanghai; Today Art Museum, Beijing;
Kaohsiung Fine Ares Museum, Taiwan; the Museum of Fine Arts, Shanghai; and many other venues.
In addition to painting, Ho continues to work as a scenic painter for Riverbed Theatre Company.
